Contraception & Family Planning

What is Contraception?

Contraception prevents pregnancy. In the UK, it’s free through the NHS and available via GPs, clinics, and some pharmacies.

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)

LARC methods are highly effective, long-term, and reversible. They don’t require daily action.

Common LARC methods:

  • Implant – under the arm, lasts up to 3 years (NHS)
  • IUD (Copper coil) – in the uterus, lasts 5–10 years (THT)
  • IUS (Hormonal coil) – in the uterus, lasts 5–8 years
  • Injection – lasts 8–13 weeks

Note: LARC does not protect against STIs; use condoms for STI prevention.

Benefits of LARC

  • Over 99% effective
  • Convenient, long-lasting, reversible
  • Cost-effective
  • May have non-contraceptive benefits (e.g., lighter periods)

Choosing the Right Contraception
