Primary Care Network

General Practice Nurses (GPNs)

Our General Practice Nurses (GPNs) are registered nurses who work autonomously within the primary care team to provide expert, hands-on care for patients of all ages. They are a vital part of your GP surgery, supporting you with both clinical care and health promotion.

Many of our GPNs are supported through the Staffordshire GPN Foundation School, a programme that trains and guides nurses through their first year in general practice.

What They Do

GPNs can:

  • Provide hands-on nursing care, including wound care, immunisations, vaccinations, and cervical screening
  • Care for patients of all ages, from babies and children to adults and older patients
  • Hold clinics for patients with long-term conditions such as asthma, heart disease, and diabetes
  • Offer health promotion and advice on contraception, weight management, smoking cessation, and overall wellbeing
  • Support men’s and women’s health, helping you stay healthy through education, screening, and preventative care

How It Works

  • You can see a GPN for routine appointments, long-term condition reviews, vaccinations, or health advice
  • GPNs work closely with GPs and other members of the primary care team, ensuring your care is coordinated and personalised
  • They provide both treatment and guidance, helping you manage your health and make informed choices

Why This Matters to You

With a GPN:

  • You receive expert, hands-on care from a highly trained nurse
  • Your long-term conditions are monitored and managed through specialised clinics
  • You benefit from preventive care and health advice to stay well and prevent illness
  • Care is personalised, coordinated, and accessible, with support for all ages and stages of life
  • You have a trusted professional to answer questions, provide guidance, and support your health goals
